Golden Bay, a shimmering crescent of sand and sea at the top of New Zealand's South Island, feels like a world apart. Reached via the winding Takaka Hill road, this sun-drenched region rewards travellers with laid-back coastal vibes, quirky artistic communities, and some of the country's most pristine beaches. The pace slows down here – expect to trade your watch for the tide chart.
Highlights & What to See
- Abel Tasman National Park – golden sand beaches and turquoise waters; walk the Coast Track or kayak between secluded coves.
- Farewell Spit – a vast sandspit and bird sanctuary; take a guided tour to see gannet colonies and the dramatic lighthouse.
- Te Waikoropupū Springs – some of the clearest freshwater springs in the world, with an ethereal blue glow.
- Wharariki Beach – wild, windswept beach with seal colonies and the iconic Archway Islands; a short walk from the carpark.
- Takaka – the bohemian hub of Golden Bay, with organic cafes, galleries, and the legendary wholefoods store.
- Pupu Springs Walk – a short boardwalk through lush forest to the main spring pool.
- Ngarua Caves – limestone caves with glowworms and moa bones, near Takaka.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least three full days to Golden Bay to truly unwind and explore. Two days allow a quick taste: one for Abel Tasman (a day walk or kayak trip) and one for Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach. With three to four days, you can add Te Waikoropupū Springs, explore Takaka's creative scene, and take a scenic flight over the coast. The winding road in and out means you'll want to settle in rather than rush through.
