Just a short drive from Hanmer Springs village, Fairy Springs is a serene pocket of native forest where crystal-clear spring water bubbles up from the earth. Walking the easy loop trail, you'll cross wooden boardwalks over tranquil pools, with the constant sound of birdsong and trickling water. The water is so pure you can see every pebble on the bottom, and the dappled light filtering through the canopy gives the place a genuinely enchanted feel – it's easy to see how it earned its name.
Highlights & What to See
- Fairy Springs Loop Walk – a short, easy 30-minute loop through podocarp forest with boardwalks and viewing platforms over the crystal-clear springs.
- Native birdlife – keep an eye out for kererū (wood pigeon), fantails, and bellbirds flitting through the trees.
- Pristine spring pools – the main spring is a brilliant turquoise, fed by underground aquifers; you can see the sand ‘boiling’ where the water rises.
- Picnic spots – several benches and clearings make this a lovely spot for a quiet lunch surrounded by nature.
- Interpretive signs – learn about the local Māori legend of the springs and the unique ecology of this wetland forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes to walk the loop and soak up the atmosphere. It’s an ideal short stop – combine it with a morning at the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools or a longer tramp in the nearby forest. If you're a keen photographer, plan for a bit longer to capture the reflections and the play of light on the water.
