Coronet Peak is the ski field that put Queenstown on the winter map, a classic New Zealand alpine playground that’s been drawing snow lovers since the first rope tow spun in 1947. Just a 20-minute drive from Queenstown, this mountain combines serious skiing and snowboarding terrain with some of the most jaw-dropping views in the Southern Lakes – think jagged peaks, frozen lakes, and a sky so blue it hurts. Whether you’re carving groomers, dropping into the M1 chutes, or just sipping a hot chocolate on the deck, Coronet Peak has a no-nonsense, fun-loving vibe that’s pure Kiwi.
Highlights & What to See
- Night Skiing: Coronet Peak is one of the few mountains in New Zealand offering night skiing on Friday and Saturday nights during peak season – the floodlit runs are a surreal, starry experience.
- The M1 Chutes: For advanced skiers and boarders, these steep, narrow gullies off the summit are legendary. They’re short but punchy, with a serious adrenaline kick.
- Coronet Peak Summit: Ride the Coronet Express chairlift to the top (1,649 m) for 360-degree views over The Remarkables, Lake Wakatipu, and the distant Fiordland peaks.
- Family-Friendly Terrain: The Big Easy and the Greengates beginner area are perfect for first-timers, with gentle slopes and patient instructors.
- Après-Ski at the Base Building: The heated outdoor deck is the place to be, with live music, local wines, and a cracking view of the sun setting over the mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to Coronet Peak – arrive early to nab a parking spot, ski through the morning, grab lunch at the base, then hit the slopes again until the lifts close around 4 pm. If you’re night-skiing, aim to arrive by 3:30 pm to enjoy the twilight transition. A half-day is feasible if you’re short on time or combining with another activity, but you’ll wish you’d stayed longer. For a relaxed pace, consider two days: one for exploring the mountain, another for revisiting your favourite runs.
