Cone K is a striking peak in the Hanmer Springs area, offering one of the most rewarding day hikes in North Canterbury. Its distinctive conical shape dominates the skyline, and the summit rewards with panoramic views over the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Hanmer Basin, and on a clear day, the east coast. This is a classic New Zealand tramp – steep, exposed, and utterly exhilarating.
Highlights & What to See
- The Summit View: A 360-degree spectacle of mountains, plains, and the Pacific Ocean – bring a camera and a picnic to soak it in.
- Alpine Flora: In summer, the slopes are dotted with mountain daisies, edelweiss, and tussock – a botanist’s delight.
- Rock Formations: The upper reaches feature interesting limestone outcrops and scree slopes, adding a geological edge to the walk.
- Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools: After the hike, soothe tired muscles in the nearby hot pools – the perfect reward.
- Dog-Friendly Trail: Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome, making it a great option for travelling with your furry friend.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full half-day for the return hike to Cone K. Most fit walkers complete it in 3–4 hours return, but factor in extra time for photos, snacks, and enjoying the summit. Start early in the morning to avoid the heat in summer and to catch the best light. If you’re less experienced, budget up to 5 hours with breaks. It’s a steep climb, but the effort is well worth it.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hanmer Springs: The village itself, with its famous hot pools, spa treatments, and excellent cafés.
- Conical Hill Walk: A shorter, easier hike in Hanmer Forest Park with lovely beech forest and a lookout.
- Waiau Ferry Bridge: A historic bridge and a good spot for jet-boating or a riverside picnic.
- Kaikōura: Drive east for whale watching, dolphin encounters, and fresh seafood – about 1.5 hours away.
- Molesworth Station: New Zealand’s largest farm, open in summer for a scenic drive through high-country tussocklands.
