Cone K is a striking peak in the Hanmer Springs area, offering one of the most rewarding day hikes in North Canterbury. Its distinctive conical shape dominates the skyline, and the summit rewards with panoramic views over the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Hanmer Basin, and on a clear day, the east coast. This is a classic New Zealand tramp – steep, exposed, and utterly exhilarating.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full half-day for the return hike to Cone K. Most fit walkers complete it in 3–4 hours return, but factor in extra time for photos, snacks, and enjoying the summit. Start early in the morning to avoid the heat in summer and to catch the best light. If you’re less experienced, budget up to 5 hours with breaks. It’s a steep climb, but the effort is well worth it.
