Collingwood is a sleepy coastal settlement at the northern tip of the South Island, where Golden Bay meets the Tasman Sea. With a population of just a few hundred, this is a place for those who crave solitude, wild beaches, and the raw beauty of New Zealand's far north. The town itself is unpretentious, with a handful of historic buildings and a laid-back vibe that feels a world away from the tourist crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Farewell Spit – A 35-km sandspit that is a nature reserve and bird sanctuary. Take a guided tour to see gannet colonies, seals, and the dramatic dunes.
- Wharariki Beach – Accessible via a 20-minute walk through farmland, this wild beach is famous for its sea arches and seal colonies. The sunset views are spectacular.
- Te Waikoropupū Springs – Clear, pristine freshwater springs with incredible visibility. A short walk leads to viewing platforms.
- Collingwood's Historic Buildings – The old police station and courthouse (now a museum) offer a glimpse into the gold-mining past.
- Kahurangi National Park – The Heaphy Track and other tramping routes start near here. Even a short walk into the park reveals ancient forests and alpine views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least two days to fully appreciate the area. Day one: explore Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach. Day two: visit the springs and take a short walk in Kahurangi National Park. If you're a keen tramper, allow three to four days for a section of the Heaphy Track.
