Every May, the southernmost tip of New Zealand erupts in a briny, shucking, slurping celebration of the Bluff oyster. The Bluff Oyster Festival is a one-day seafood bacchanal held in the small port town of Bluff, drawing oyster lovers from around the globe. The star of the show is the plump, creamy Bluff oyster (Tiostrea chilensis), harvested from the cold, pristine waters of Foveaux Strait. Beyond the oysters, expect a carnival atmosphere with live music, oyster-shucking competitions, cooking demonstrations, and plenty of local wine and beer. It’s a quintessentially Kiwi event that combines food, community, and a touch of southern hospitality.
