The Ben Ohau Range rises dramatically above the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki, offering some of New Zealand's most spectacular alpine scenery. This rugged mountain range, part of the Southern Alps, is a paradise for hikers and photographers, with its sharp peaks, ancient glaciers, and vast tussock-covered slopes. The range's proximity to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park makes it a perfect complement to any South Island itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Spend at least half a day to fully appreciate the Ben Ohau Range. If you're just driving through, allow an hour for photo stops at Lake Pukaki. For a short walk, budget 2–3 hours. Hikers tackling a full ridge route should plan for a full day. Combine with Aoraki/Mount Cook Village for a two-day stay to explore the area thoroughly.
