Banks Peninsula, a dramatic volcanic landscape jutting into the Pacific east of Christchurch, is a world away from the Canterbury Plains. Its steep, green hills are etched with secluded bays, pristine beaches, and the quaint French-influenced town of Akaroa. This is a place for slow exploration – kayaking with Hector's dolphins, hiking the Banks Peninsula Track, or simply soaking up the laid-back coastal vibe.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two full days to experience the peninsula properly. One day is enough for a quick Akaroa visit and a dolphin cruise, but staying overnight allows you to tackle a section of the Banks Peninsula Track, explore the quieter bays like Pigeon Bay and Little Akaloa, and enjoy the region's excellent food and wine without rushing.
