New Zealand’s longest cycle trail, the Alps to Ocean (A2O) stretches from the foot of Aoraki/Mount Cook to the sea at Oamaru, offering a jaw-dropping journey through the heart of the South Island. This 300 km ride is a bucket-list experience for cyclists of all abilities, combining epic alpine vistas, turquoise lakes, and the rugged Waitaki Valley. Whether you tackle the full nine-day route or sample a section, the A2O delivers an immersive adventure through some of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park: Start at the foot of New Zealand’s highest peak, with views of the Tasman Glacier and its terminal lake dotted with icebergs.
- Lake Pukaki & Lake Ōhau: Pedal alongside the milky-blue waters of these glacier-fed lakes, with the Southern Alps as a backdrop.
- Waitaki Valley: Descend into the dry, golden hills of the Mackenzie Basin, passing historic hydro dams and the quirky town of Ōmarama.
- Ōamaku’s Victorian Precinct: End the trail in this charming coastal town, famous for its white limestone buildings, steampunk museum, and blue penguin colony.
- Heritage and geology: Discover Māori rock art at Duntroon and the eerie limestone formations of the Elephant Rocks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most riders take 4–6 days to complete the full trail, averaging 50–70 km per day. For a shorter taste, the section from Twizel to Ōamaru (around 3 days) offers the classic lakes-to-sea transition. If you’re short on time, a day ride from Lake Pukaki to Twizel (30 km) packs in the best alpine scenery. The trail is well signposted and mostly off-road, with plenty of accommodation and shuttle options along the way.
