Raglan is a laid-back surf town on New Zealand's west coast, famous for its world-class left-hand break at Manu Bay and a vibrant, bohemian vibe. The town hugs the shores of a natural harbour, with black sand beaches, lush green hills, and a thriving café culture that makes it a favourite among travellers seeking both adventure and relaxation.
Highlights & What to See
- Surf at Manu Bay: Catch the legendary long left-hand break featured in the 1966 film The Endless Summer. Lessons and board rentals are available for all levels.
- Bridal Veil Falls: A spectacular 55-metre waterfall plunging into a bush-clad gorge, just a 15-minute drive from Raglan. The short walk to the lookout is a must.
- Raglan Harbour: Kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or take a scenic boat cruise to explore the tranquil waters and spot birdlife. The harbour is also great for fishing.
- Raglan Art & Craft Trail: Browse galleries and studios showcasing local pottery, paintings, and jewellery – Raglan has a strong creative community.
- Whale Bay: A beautiful, less-crowded black sand beach perfect for a peaceful walk or a picnic, with excellent surf at the right swell.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 days in Raglan to soak up the surf, explore the waterfalls, and enjoy the town's relaxed pace. If you're short on time, a day trip from Hamilton (around 45 minutes away) is feasible, but you'll want to stay longer to truly unwind. Consider an overnight stay to catch a sunrise surf and a sunset meal at one of the waterfront cafes.
