Karangahake Gorge, carved by the Ohinemuri River, is a stunning blend of natural beauty and gold-mining history. This dramatic river canyon, flanked by lush native bush and towering cliffs, offers some of the North Island's best short walks, historic tunnels, and swimming holes. It's a must-stop on the journey between the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty, and a perfect spot for a few hours of exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Walkway & Tunnels – Follow the old railway line through dark, atmospheric tunnels (bring a torch!) and over swingbridges, with interpretive panels detailing the gold-rush era.
- Owharoa Falls – A picturesque waterfall just off the main road, great for a quick photo stop and a refreshing dip in the pool below.
- Karangahake Gorge Windows Walk – A shorter loop that passes through a series of old mining tunnels and offers dramatic views of the gorge.
- Dickey Flat Campsite & Swimming Holes – A popular DOC campsite with access to the river; cool off in the clear, deep pools on a hot day.
- Gold Mining Relics – Scattered along the tracks are remnants of stamper batteries and mining machinery, giving a tangible sense of the area’s past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours exploring the main Historic Walkway and the Windows Walk. If you want to add a swim or a picnic, plan for half a day. The gorge is often visited as a stopover on a road trip between Thames and Tauranga, so a quick hour-long walk is also rewarding.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Waihi – Just a short drive north, this gold-mining town offers the massive Martha Mine open pit and the beautiful Waihi Beach.
- Paeroa – South of the gorge, home to the famous L&P bottle and a charming main street with antique shops and cafes.
- Coromandel Peninsula – Extend your trip to explore the rugged coastline, Cathedral Cove, and the hot water beach.
- Tauranga & Mount Maunganui – An hour south, these coastal cities offer excellent beaches, dining, and the iconic Mount climb.
