East Cape

East Cape is New Zealand's most remote and rugged corner, where the Pacific Ocean crashes against dramatic cliffs and the road winds through lush native forest. This is a land of deep Māori heritage, with marae-studded coastlines and the country's most isolated lighthouse. Driving the Pacific Coast Highway here feels like stepping back in time—expect few cars, tiny settlements, and a powerful sense of isolation. The sunrise here is the first in the world to greet each new day, making it a pilgrimage for early risers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two full days to drive the loop from Gisborne around the cape and back. The sealed road is narrow and winding, with limited services, so take your time. Overnight in Te Araroa or Hicks Bay to catch the sunrise at the lighthouse. If you're short on time, a day trip to Tolaga Bay and the lighthouse is possible but rushed—better to savor the journey.
