Perched on the easternmost tip of New Zealand's North Island, East Cape Lighthouse is a place where the sun rises first each day. The journey to this remote beacon is an adventure in itself, winding along coastal roads with dramatic ocean views. The lighthouse, built in 1900, stands 154 metres above sea level, offering a breathtaking panorama of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged coastline. The final approach involves a steep but rewarding climb up 700 steps, but the sense of standing at the edge of the world is unforgettable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day to fully experience East Cape Lighthouse. The drive from Gisborne city takes about 2 hours each way, so plan for a morning or afternoon trip. Spend 1-2 hours at the lighthouse itself, including the climb and time to soak in the views. If you're keen on sunrise, an early start is essential, and you'll want to factor in time for stops along the scenic route.
