Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park, a tranquil lakeside town that feels like the last outpost before the wild. With Lake Te Anau stretching out in deep blue and the Murchison Mountains rising behind, it’s a place where you trade city noise for birdcalls and the gentle lap of water. This is your launchpad for Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and some of New Zealand’s most epic hikes.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Te Anau & Lakefront Walk – Stroll the lakeside path at sunrise when the water is glassy and the mountains reflect perfectly. Rent a kayak or join a scenic cruise to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves – A boat ride across the lake leads you into limestone caves lit by thousands of glowworms. The underground waterfall and silent boat drift through the grotto are magical.
- Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre – Stop here for expert advice on tracks, weather, and road conditions. The centre has excellent exhibits on the region’s unique ecosystems and Māori history.
- Milford Sound – While technically a day trip, no visit to Te Anau is complete without experiencing this fiord. Drive the spectacular Milford Road (SH 94), stopping at Mirror Lakes and The Chasm.
- Doubtful Sound – Less crowded than Milford, this fiord offers a deeper wilderness experience. Access requires a boat cruise across Lake Manapouri and a bus ride over Wilmot Pass – book a full-day tour.
- Kepler Track – One of New Zealand’s Great Walks, this 60 km loop starts and ends in Te Anau. Even a day hike to Luxmore Hut rewards with panoramic views of Lake Te Anau and the Kepler Mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two nights in Te Anau to allow a full day for Milford Sound and another for Doubtful Sound or a hike. If you’re tackling the Kepler Track, add three to four days. One night is possible but rushed – you’d miss the glowworm caves and the chance to explore the lake.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Milford Sound – The star attraction, about two hours’ drive via the stunning Milford Road. Combine with a cruise or kayak trip.
- Doubtful Sound – A longer day trip that feels more remote and serene. The journey itself is an adventure across lakes and passes.
- Milford Track – One of the world’s finest multi-day hikes, starting at the head of Lake Te Anau. Requires advance booking and four days.
- Manapouri – A tiny lakeside settlement 20 minutes south, gateway to Doubtful Sound and the start of the Kepler Track. Charming and quiet.
- Routeburn Track – Another Great Walk accessible from Te Anau, though the trailhead is near Glenorchy. Day walks or a full traverse are possible.
