Deep beneath the Murchison Mountains, the Te Anau Glowworm Caves are a subterranean wonderland where thousands of tiny glowworms illuminate the darkness like a starry night sky. Accessed only by a scenic boat ride across Lake Te Anau, this guided tour takes you through limestone passages, past roaring underground waterfalls, and into a silent grotto where you drift by boat under the ethereal blue-green glow. It's an intimate, magical encounter with one of New Zealand's most unique ecosystems.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

The entire tour, including the boat transfer and cave visit, takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Plan for a half-day activity from Te Anau, allowing extra time to enjoy the lakefront or grab a meal. Tours run several times daily, but booking ahead is essential, especially in peak season (October–April).
