Lake Manapouri, often called New Zealand’s most beautiful lake, is a serene masterpiece of Fiordland National Park. Its deep, dark waters reflect a cathedral of peaks, forested islands, and waterfalls. As the gateway to Doubtful Sound, it offers a quieter, more intimate Fiordland experience than its famous neighbor Milford Sound. The small lakeside settlement of Manapouri is the perfect base for kayaking, cruising, or simply soaking in the raw tranquility.
Highlights & What to See
- Doubtful Sound Cruise – A journey across Lake Manapouri, over Wilmot Pass, and into the remote, misty fiord; includes a visit to the Manapouri Power Station’s tailrace tunnel.
- Lake Manapouri Water Taxi & Kayaking – Explore the lake’s 33 islands, hidden coves, and granite shores; kayak to the historic Rona Island or under the gaze of Mt. Titiroa.
- Hope Arm & Supply Bay Walks – Short, rewarding hikes through beech forest to pristine beaches with views across the lake to the Hunter Mountains.
- Manapouri Power Station – An underground marvel; take the tour to see the world’s largest underground hydro station, built without damaging the lake’s natural beauty.
- Lake Manapouri Lookout – A quick stop on the road to Pearl Harbour for a panoramic view of the lake and its islands.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day for a Doubtful Sound cruise (6–8 hours) or a half-day for kayaking and short walks. If you’re short on time, a two-hour lake cruise or a scenic drive with a picnic at the lake’s edge can still capture its essence. Most visitors combine Lake Manapouri with Te Anau as a day trip or overnight stop.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
