There are few places on earth that make you feel as small and insignificant as the Kepler Track. This 60-kilometre (37-mile) circuit, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, cuts through the heart of Fiordland National Park, a landscape so raw and ancient it feels like the world's blueprint. From the shores of Lake Te Anau to the alpine ridges of the Murchison Mountains, the Kepler is a journey through misty beech forests, tussock-covered peaks, and glacial valleys. It's not just a walk; it's a pilgrimage into the wild soul of Aotearoa.
Highlights & What to See
- Luxmore Hut to Mount Luxmore Summit: The iconic alpine section. Climb above the bushline for 360-degree views of Lake Te Anau, the Kepler Mountains, and on clear days, the Tasman Sea. The sunset from here is legendary.
- Iris Burn Hut & Waterfall: A stunning valley walk through red beech forest, culminating in a 15-metre waterfall that plunges into a deep pool. Perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day.
- Control Gates: The start and end point. These historic gates regulate Lake Te Anau's water level for hydroelectricity, but they also mark the threshold between civilisation and wilderness.
- Moturau Hut: Situated on the shores of Lake Manapouri, this hut offers serene lake views and a chance to spot rare native birds like the mohua (yellowhead) and kea.
- Limestone Bluffs & Caves: Near Luxmore Hut, explore the eerie limestone formations and short caves – evidence of the area's ancient seabed origins.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Kepler Track in 3–4 days, moving between the four well-equipped huts. The standard direction is clockwise from the Control Gates, which gives you the toughest climb on day one and a gentler descent. If you're short on time, you can day-hike the first section to Luxmore Hut and back (about 6–8 hours), but the full circuit is where the magic lies. Book huts well in advance – they fill up months ahead during peak season (October to April).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Milford Sound: The most famous fiord in New Zealand, a 2-hour drive from Te Anau. Take a cruise to see waterfalls, seals, and dolphins.
- Doubtful Sound: Larger and quieter than Milford, accessed via a boat ride across Lake Manapouri and a bus over Wilmot Pass. A true wilderness experience.
- Te Anau: The gateway town to Fiordland. Stock up on supplies, visit the glowworm caves, and enjoy a meal at one of the lakeside restaurants before or after your tramp.
- Milford Track: Another Great Walk, famous for its waterfalls and rainforest. It's a 4-day, 53.5 km (33 mi) journey from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound.
