Hot Water Beach is one of New Zealand's most unusual natural attractions, where geothermal activity meets the Pacific Ocean. At low tide, you can dig your own hot pool in the sand, with mineral-rich water bubbling up from deep underground. It's a surreal and utterly Kiwi experience — bring a spade, or rent one from the nearby café, and soak in your own hand-carved spa while waves crash just metres away.
Highlights & What to See
- Dig Your Own Hot Pool: At low tide, head to the designated area near the rocks and dig a hole in the sand. Within minutes, it fills with naturally heated water (around 64°C/147°F) — mix with cooler seawater for the perfect soak.
- Cathedral Cove: A short drive north leads to this iconic sea cave and pristine beach, accessible via a scenic coastal walk or kayak tour.
- Whitianga: The nearby town offers a charming marina, Mercury Bay Museum, and boat trips to explore the coast and marine reserve.
- Geothermal Springs: Beyond the beach, the Coromandel Peninsula is dotted with hot springs and thermal reserves, such as those in the Coromandel Town area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 2–3 hours around low tide to enjoy the hot pools and explore the beach. If you're combining with Cathedral Cove, allow a full day. The best time to visit is during a low tide of 1.0m or less — check tide tables in advance, as the window is roughly two hours either side of low tide.
