Perched high above the Coromandel township, the Driving Creek Railway is a quirky, hand-built narrow-gauge railway that chugs through native forest to a stunning viewpoint. Created by potter and conservationist Barry Brickell over several decades, this unique attraction combines engineering ingenuity, environmental passion, and breathtaking coastal vistas. The 55-minute return journey aboard the tiny train rattles past kauri groves, through tunnels and over viaducts, ending at the Eyifel Tower viewpoint – a wooden lookout tower offering panoramic views across the Hauraki Gulf. It's a delightful blend of history, nature, and whimsy that appeals to train buffs, families, and anyone seeking a memorable Coromandel experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for around 1.5 to 2 hours total, which includes the 55-minute round-trip train ride plus time to explore the pottery studio and viewpoint. Trains depart several times daily (check the schedule in advance). It's a great half-day activity when combined with other Coromandel sights – aim for a morning or late-afternoon departure to catch the best light for photos.
