West Coast
New Zealand's West Coast is a raw, untamed stretch of wilderness where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient rainforests, glaciers carve valleys, and gold-rush history lingers in weathered towns. This is a place for those who crave dramatic landscapes, epic hikes, and a sense of isolation that feels both thrilling and humbling. The weather is famously unpredictable, but that only adds to the brooding beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – Hike to the terminal face of these dynamic glaciers, or take a heli-hike for an up-close ice experience. The nearby glacier valleys offer short walks through rainforest.
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks – At high tide, the blowholes erupt through layered limestone formations. The short loop walk is a must, even in drizzle.
- Hokitika Gorge – A short walk leads to a swingbridge overlooking impossibly turquoise water, set against lush native bush.
- Ōkārito Lagoon – Paddle a kayak through this serene wetland, home to white herons (kotuku) and other birdlife. Early morning is magical.
- Shantytown Heritage Park – Step back into the 1860s gold-rush era in this living-history museum near Greymouth; try your hand at gold panning.
- Haast Pass & Gates of Haast – The drive over the pass offers waterfalls, rainforest walks, and the chance to see rare kea parrots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least 3–4 days to experience the West Coast's highlights without rushing. A classic road trip from Greymouth to Franz Josef takes two days, but add an extra day for glacier hikes or kayaking. The drive itself is an attraction—allow plenty of time for spontaneous stops at viewpoints and short walks. If you're combining with Queenstown or the Southern Alps, consider a 5–7 day loop.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lewis Pass – A quieter alternative to Arthur's Pass, with hot springs and beech forest trails.
- Nelson Lakes National Park – Head north for pristine alpine lakes and tramping tracks, a few hours' drive from Greymouth.
- Queenstown & Wanaka – The West Coast's southern end connects via Haast Pass to these adventure hubs; a classic South Island road trip.
- Christchurch – Gateway city with post-earthquake rebuild, botanical gardens, and Antarctic attractions; start or end your West Coast journey here.
