Perched on the slopes of the hills overlooking Wellington Harbour, the Botanic Garden is a living museum of native and exotic flora, a tranquil escape from the city's windy streets. Founded in 1868, this 25-hectare sanctuary offers sweeping views, themed gardens, and a rich collection of plants from around the world. It's a favorite spot for locals to jog, picnic, or simply wander among the towering pines and colourful flowerbeds. The garden's layout rewards aimless strolling, but a few highlights are not to be missed.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors find two to three hours sufficient to explore the main gardens and enjoy a coffee at the Begonia House. If you plan to visit the Carter Observatory or take a guided tour, allow four hours. The garden is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace; combine it with a walk through the adjacent Bolton Street Cemetery or a ride on the historic Wellington Cable Car, which has a stop at the garden's top entrance.
