Just 45 minutes north of Wellington, Kaitoke Regional Park is a lush slice of native forest that feels a world away from the city. The park is best known as the filming location for the Elven forest of Rivendell in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but its real draw is the network of walking trails that wind through towering rimu and beech trees, alongside crystal-clear rivers. Whether you're a film buff, a keen tramper, or simply after a peaceful picnic spot, Kaitoke delivers a quintessential New Zealand bush experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Rivendell Film Site – Follow the short loop track to the exact spot where Frodo and the Fellowship rested; interpretive signs bring the movie magic to life.
- Hutt River Swimming Holes – The river is renowned for its deep, clear pools – perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day. The popular 'Waterworks' area has a gentle flow and is family-friendly.
- Kaitoke Waterworks Walk – A 20-minute loop that passes a historic water supply tunnel and offers great views of the river.
- Pakuratahi Forks Track – A longer 3-hour return walk that takes you through dense forest to the confluence of the Pakuratahi and Hutt Rivers, with abundant birdlife including kererū and tūī.
- Mountain Biking – The park has several graded mountain bike trails, including the popular 4WD track that connects to the Remutaka Cycle Trail.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty to explore the highlights: allow 1–2 hours for the Rivendell loop and a swim, or up to 4 hours if you're tackling the Pakuratahi Forks Track. Combine it with a visit to nearby Upper Hutt or the Remutaka Range for a full day out. The park is easily doable as a morning or afternoon trip from Wellington city.
