Just 45 minutes north of Christchurch, the Waipara Wine Region unfurls across rolling hills and river terraces, where limestone-rich soils and a long, dry growing season produce some of New Zealand's most elegant cool-climate wines. This is a place where you can taste world-class Pinot Noir and Riesling straight from the cellar door, often with the winemaker pouring the glass, all against a backdrop of golden hills and the distant Southern Alps.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Devote at least half a day to exploring the region – four to five hours allows for three to four cellar door visits and a relaxed lunch. If you're a serious wine enthusiast, a full day gives you time to delve deeper into the boutique producers and perhaps join a vineyard tour. The region is compact, so you won't spend much time driving between stops.
