The Waimakariri River, known as the 'River of Cold Rushing Water', is a braided alpine river that carves its way from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean just north of Christchurch. Its wide, shingle-filled channels and turquoise waters create a dramatic landscape, offering a wild slice of New Zealand's backcountry within easy reach of the city. For travellers, the river is a playground for adventure and a serene escape into nature, with its banks providing prime spots for picnicking, fishing, and jet-boating.
Highlights & What to See
- Jet-boating on the braided channels: Experience a heart-pumping ride across the shallow, fast-flowing waters, with expert drivers spinning 360-degree turns.
- Salmon fishing: The river is famous for its Chinook salmon runs (November–March). Cast a line from the banks or join a guided trip.
- Waimakariri Gorge: Drive to the gorge bridge for stunning views of the river cutting through rocky cliffs. It's a popular spot for bungy jumping and photography.
- Mountain biking on the trails: The river's gravel bars and 4WD tracks offer challenging rides, especially the Waimakariri River Track near the coast.
- Birdwatching at the river mouth: Spot black swans, herons, and the rare wrybill plover in the wetlands where the river meets the sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is sufficient for a jet-boat ride or a fishing trip, but if you want to explore the gorge, bike, or hike, allocate a full day. The river is best enjoyed in the drier months (October–April); after heavy rain, the water can become murky and unsafe for swimming.
