The Waimakariri River, known as the 'River of Cold Rushing Water', is a braided alpine river that carves its way from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean just north of Christchurch. Its wide, shingle-filled channels and turquoise waters create a dramatic landscape, offering a wild slice of New Zealand's backcountry within easy reach of the city. For travellers, the river is a playground for adventure and a serene escape into nature, with its banks providing prime spots for picnicking, fishing, and jet-boating.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is sufficient for a jet-boat ride or a fishing trip, but if you want to explore the gorge, bike, or hike, allocate a full day. The river is best enjoyed in the drier months (October–April); after heavy rain, the water can become murky and unsafe for swimming.
