Just a 20-minute drive from Christchurch city centre, Taylors Mistake feels a world away. This sheltered bay, with its dark volcanic sand and rolling surf, is a favourite among locals for its relaxed vibe and excellent coastal walks. The name is said to date from the 1850s when a ship's captain mistakenly anchored here instead of Lyttelton Harbour. Today, it's a place for swimming (in the mild months), surfing, and soaking up the raw beauty of Banks Peninsula.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing & Swimming: The beach has consistent breaks for intermediate surfers, while the eastern end offers calmer waters for swimming. Lifeguards patrol in summer.
- Godley Head Walkway: A spectacular coastal track (part of the Te Araroa Trail) that winds past WWII gun emplacements and offers panoramic views over Lyttelton Harbour. Allow 2–3 hours return.
- Taylors Mistake Café: A beloved local spot right on the beach, serving excellent coffee, fish and chips, and hearty breakfasts. The perfect post-walk reward.
- Boulder Bay: A short walk north of the beach leads to this secluded cove, popular for picnics and exploring rock pools.
- Summit Road Lookouts: Drive or cycle the winding Summit Road above the bay for breathtaking views over the peninsula and the Southern Alps on a clear day.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: spend a couple of hours walking the Godley Head track, then relax on the beach or grab a bite at the café. If you're a keen surfer, you could easily while away a full day riding waves and soaking up the sun. Combine with a visit to Lyttelton or the nearby Christchurch Adventure Park for a full day out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
