Takaka is the vibrant hub of Golden Bay, a sun-soaked pocket of the South Island that feels a world away from the rest of New Zealand. With its bohemian vibe, crystal-clear rivers, and golden beaches, this town is a magnet for artists, musicians, and nature lovers. The main street is lined with quirky galleries, organic cafes, and craft shops, all set against a backdrop of lush hills and the shimmering waters of the bay.
Highlights & What to See
- Te Waikoropupu Springs: Known as the 'Pupu Springs', these are the clearest springs in the Southern Hemisphere, with a sacred Maori significance and a mesmerising blue-green hue. A short boardwalk loop leads to viewing platforms.
- Golden Bay beaches: Totally unspoiled, with Kaiteriteri Beach offering golden sand and kayaking, while Wharariki Beach (at the end of a farm track) is famous for its seal colony and dramatic rock arches.
- Abel Tasman National Park: New Zealand's smallest national park is all about golden beaches, turquoise water, and the world-class Abel Tasman Coast Track. Take a water taxi for a day walk or multi-day tramp.
- Farewell Spit: A 25km sandspit that's a nature reserve for migrating birds. Join a guided tour to explore the lighthouse and gannet colony.
- Ngarua Caves: Limestone caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, accessible via a guided tour that reveals glowworms and fossilised moa bones.
- Takaka Hill: The dramatic marble mountain pass offers stunning views and the Ngarua Caves (same as above) are located here.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least two full days to soak up Takaka's laid-back atmosphere and explore Golden Bay's highlights. One day can be dedicated to the Abel Tasman National Park (a water taxi trip and coastal walk), while the other could cover Te Waikoropupu Springs, a beach visit, and a wander through town. If you have a third day, venture to Farewell Spit or do a longer tramp in the park.
