Punakaiki, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is a place where the Tasman Sea crashes into ancient limestone cliffs, creating the famous Pancake Rocks. This small settlement is a must-stop on any road trip between Nelson and the glaciers, offering dramatic coastal scenery, lush rainforest, and a raw, untamed atmosphere that feels a world away from the rest of the country.
Highlights & What to See
- Pancake Rocks & Blowholes: The star attraction – layered limestone formations that look like stacks of pancakes, especially dramatic at high tide when blowholes spout plumes of seawater.
- Truman Track: A short, easy walk through nikau palm forest to a stunning secluded beach and sea-carved caverns.
- Punakaiki Cavern: A natural limestone cave with glowworms – bring a torch and explore the short, free-access tunnel.
- Pororari River Track: A gentle walk through a limestone gorge with towering cliffs and lush native bush; perfect for a morning stroll.
- Paparoa National Park: The park surrounds Punakaiki, offering longer hikes like the Inland Pack Track and the chance to spot rare birds like the great spotted kiwi.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a couple of hours to half a day exploring the Pancake Rocks and a short walk, but Punakaiki deserves at least one night to soak up the moody coastal vibes. If you have a full day, add a longer hike or a kayak trip up the Pororari River. For those on a tight schedule, a 2-hour stop is enough to see the rocks and do the Truman Track.
