Rising dramatically from the edge of Christchurch, the Port Hills offer a rugged, volcanic counterpoint to the city's flat grid. The Christchurch Gondola carries you 1.5 km to the summit for 360-degree views that sweep from the Southern Alps across the patchwork of Banks Peninsula to the Pacific. It's a place where the city's geographical drama unfolds beneath you, and where walking trails, mountain-bike tracks, and the historic crater villages invite deeper exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Christchurch Gondola: A smooth, glass-walled ride to the summit with ever-expanding views. At the top, the Time Tunnel exhibit tells the region's geological story, and the outdoor viewing platforms are perfect for photos.
- Summit Road & Walking Tracks: Walk the Crater Rim Track for a stunning ridge traverse, or the shorter Bridle Path that follows the original route of early settlers from Lyttelton Harbour. The views of Lyttelton's volcanic crater are unforgettable.
- Lyttelton: The port town at the foot of the hills is a character-filled place with a thriving café scene, artisan shops, and the historic Lyttelton Farmers' Market (Saturdays). The drive over Evans Pass is a thrill in itself.
- Mountain Biking: The Port Hills are a magnet for cyclists, with purpose-built trails like the Crater Rim Trail and the more technical Rapaki Track offering epic descents and views.
- Sign of the Kiwi & Sign of the Takahe: Two historic stone rest houses built in the early 1900s, now café and lookout points along Summit Road. The Sign of the Kiwi is a popular stop for a coffee with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a half-day to fully appreciate the Port Hills. Start with the gondola ride (allow 1–1.5 hours including the summit exhibits and a walk along the viewing platforms). Then drive Summit Road, stopping at the Sign of the Kiwi for a coffee and a short walk on the Crater Rim Track. If you have time, descend into Lyttelton for lunch and a wander. For mountain bikers, plan a full day to tackle the trails. The hills are also a perfect sunset destination—the light over the city and Alps is magical.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lyttelton Harbour: Explore the harbour by boat, kayak, or take a ferry to Quail Island for a day hike.
- Sumner & New Brighton: Coastal suburbs with sandy beaches, great fish-and-chip shops, and the New Brighton Pier.
