Ohau Waterfall is a hidden gem on the South Island’s east coast, tucked away on private land near the Ohau River mouth. This delicate cascade spills directly onto a wild beach, creating a surreal scene where fresh water meets the roaring Pacific. Access requires a short walk across a farm track and a stream crossing, adding a sense of adventure. The waterfall is best visited at low tide when the beach is wide and the pool beneath the falls is calm enough for a refreshing dip. It’s a photographer’s paradise, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.
Highlights & What to See
- Waterfall on the Beach: One of the few waterfalls in New Zealand that cascades directly onto sand. Watch the freshwater fan out over the beach and mix with the surf.
- Ohau River Mouth: Just north of the waterfall, the river meets the sea – a great spot for birdwatching and spotting seals lounging on the rocks.
- Coastal Walk: The approach from the car park is a pleasant 15-minute walk through farmland and along the beach, with views of the Kaikōura Ranges.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for fur seals, seabirds, and occasionally Hector’s dolphins in the bay.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 1–2 hours for the walk, photography, and enjoying the waterfall. Combine it with a stop at the Ohau Point Seal Colony and a scenic drive along State Highway 1. The waterfall is best visited at low tide, so check tide times beforehand.
