Ohau Waterfall is a hidden gem on the South Island’s east coast, tucked away on private land near the Ohau River mouth. This delicate cascade spills directly onto a wild beach, creating a surreal scene where fresh water meets the roaring Pacific. Access requires a short walk across a farm track and a stream crossing, adding a sense of adventure. The waterfall is best visited at low tide when the beach is wide and the pool beneath the falls is calm enough for a refreshing dip. It’s a photographer’s paradise, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate 1–2 hours for the walk, photography, and enjoying the waterfall. Combine it with a stop at the Ohau Point Seal Colony and a scenic drive along State Highway 1. The waterfall is best visited at low tide, so check tide times beforehand.
