Stretching 300 metres out into the Pacific Ocean, New Brighton Pier is Christchurch's most iconic coastal landmark. Built in 1997, this wooden pier replaced an earlier structure and has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. The pier offers panoramic views of Pegasus Bay, the Port Hills, and on clear days, the distant Kaikōura Ranges. The surrounding beach is popular for swimming, surfing, and walking, while the adjacent New Brighton suburb has a laid-back vibe with a strong surf culture.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate 1–2 hours to walk the pier, enjoy the café, and soak up the beach atmosphere. If you plan to swim or surf, add another hour. The pier is a quick stop from central Christchurch (15 minutes by car) and can be combined with a visit to the nearby Bottle Lake Forest or a drive along the coast to Sumner.
