Stretching 300 metres out into the Pacific Ocean, New Brighton Pier is Christchurch's most iconic coastal landmark. Built in 1997, this wooden pier replaced an earlier structure and has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. The pier offers panoramic views of Pegasus Bay, the Port Hills, and on clear days, the distant Kaikōura Ranges. The surrounding beach is popular for swimming, surfing, and walking, while the adjacent New Brighton suburb has a laid-back vibe with a strong surf culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk the Pier: Stroll the full length of the pier, feel the sea breeze, and watch surfers ride the waves below. The pier is especially photogenic at sunrise and sunset.
- New Brighton Library & Salt on the Pier: Visit the striking modern library at the pier entrance, and grab a coffee or meal at Salt on the Pier, a glass-walled café perched at the end of the pier with 270-degree ocean views.
- Surfing and Swimming: New Brighton Beach is a popular surf break, especially for beginners. The beach is patrolled in summer, making it safe for swimming.
- Hot Pools on the Beach: Soak in the outdoor hot pools right on the sand, a unique experience offering warmth and relaxation with ocean views.
- Weekend Market: On Saturdays, the New Brighton Market sets up near the pier, selling local produce, crafts, and street food.
