Surrounded by towering peaks, glaciers, and star-filled skies, this tiny alpine settlement offers a gateway to some of the country's most dramatic landscapes. Whether you're a seasoned mountaineer or a casual hiker, the raw beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site will leave you breathless.
Highlights & What to See
- Hooker Valley Track – An easy, well-maintained walk with swing bridges, alpine tarns, and jaw-dropping views of Mount Cook and the Hooker Glacier. Allow 3 hours return.
- Tasman Glacier & Lake – A short hike to the terminal lake where you can spot icebergs floating in milky blue water. Glacier boat tours operate in summer.
- Kea Point Walk – A 30-minute return stroll to a viewpoint overlooking the Mueller Glacier moraine and Mount Sefton.
- Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre – A museum and planetarium celebrating the mountaineer who trained here before conquering Everest.
- Stargazing at Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve – One of the best places on Earth to see the Milky Way. Join a guided night tour or simply step outside after dark.

Plan for at least two full days. One day for the Hooker Valley Track and Tasman Glacier, plus a second for a scenic flight or longer hikes. If you're short on time, a day trip from Twizel or Lake Tekapo is possible, but overnighting lets you experience the incredible dark sky and early morning light on the peaks.
