Milford Road is the dramatic 120-kilometre highway that winds from Te Anau to Milford Sound, cutting through the heart of Fiordland National Park. This is not just a road—it's an epic journey through some of New Zealand's most jaw-dropping scenery, with towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and ancient rainforests closing in on the tarmac. Driving it feels like navigating a living postcard; every bend reveals a new vista that demands a pull-over. The road itself is an attraction, best savoured with time to stop and absorb the raw, untamed landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Mirror Lakes – Early on, these still pools perfectly reflect the Earl Mountains; arrive early for the best mirror effect before the wind picks up.
- Homer Tunnel – A 1.2-kilometre single-lane tunnel blasted through solid rock, emerging into a valley of sheer cliffs and waterfalls. Expect short waits for traffic lights.
- The Chasm – A short walk leads to a powerful waterfall that has carved deep swirling potholes into the rock—a dramatic display of nature's force.
- Key Summit Track – Starting from the Divide Shelter, this 3-hour return hike offers panoramic views of the Darran Mountains and alpine tarns, one of the best short walks in the park.
- Monkey Creek – A popular stop for kea sightings—these cheeky alpine parrots may inspect your car. The water here is crystal clear and drinkable.
- Milford Sound – The grand finale: a fjord of towering cliffs and waterfalls. A boat cruise is the classic way to experience it, but even just standing at the wharf is memorable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day for the return trip from Te Anau (about 2.5 hours each way without stops). To truly appreciate it, plan for 4–5 hours one-way including short walks and photo stops. Many travellers combine it with an overnight in Milford Sound or a cruise, making it a two-day excursion from Queenstown or Te Anau. The road is open year-round, but in winter (May–October) chains may be required and the Homer Tunnel can close briefly for avalanche control—check conditions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Te Anau – The gateway town, with lake views, glowworm caves, and a great base for exploring Fiordland. Stay overnight to get an early start on Milford Road.
- Milford Sound – The road's end, where you can take a cruise, kayak, or simply soak in the fjord's grandeur. Book ahead in peak season.
- Doubtful Sound – Less visited but even more remote; accessible via a cruise from Manapouri, often combined with a Milford Road trip for a multi-day Fiordland experience.
- Queenstown – A 2-hour drive from Te Anau, this adventure hub is a natural start or end point for a Fiordland itinerary.
