Little River is a tiny, artsy settlement on Banks Peninsula, 45 minutes from Christchurch. Nestled between rolling hills and the edge of Lake Forsyth, this former railway town has reinvented itself as a creative hub with a surprisingly sophisticated food scene. The drive over the Port Hills is spectacular, and the village itself feels like a well-kept secret — a perfect pit stop or a base for exploring the peninsula's wilder corners.
Highlights & What to See
- Little River Gallery & Cafe — Housed in the old railway station, this is the heart of the village. Browse contemporary New Zealand art and crafts, then fuel up with excellent coffee and seasonal fare on the sunny deck.
- Banks Peninsula Track — A multi-day walking trail that starts (or ends) here. Even if you only do a short section, the coastal views and native bush are stunning. The track passes through private farmland and penguin colonies.
- Lake Forsyth / Wairewa — A brackish lagoon just south of the village, important for birdlife (including royal spoonbills and black swans). The shoreline is great for a quiet picnic or a short walk.
- Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum — A short drive away, this open-air museum has an extraordinary collection of Māori waka (canoes) and pioneer buildings. Don't miss the wharenui (meeting house).
- Hilltop Tavern — On the road from Christchurch, stop at this legendary pub for panoramic views over Akaroa Harbour. It's a classic Kiwi roadside joint with cold beer and hearty pies.
Suggested Time to Spend
Little River itself merits 1–2 hours for a gallery visit and a meal. If you're walking part of the Banks Peninsula Track, allow half a day to a full day. Many visitors treat it as a lunch stop on a loop drive from Christchurch to Akaroa and back via the Summit Road — a journey that takes 4–6 hours with stops. For a deeper experience, spend a night in the village and explore the bays the next day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Akaroa — The peninsula's star attraction, 25 minutes further south. A historic French-settled village with harbour cruises, dolphin swimming, and excellent restaurants.
- Summit Road & the Port Hills — The scenic drive from Christchurch to Little River via the Summit Road offers jaw-dropping views of Lyttelton Harbour and the Southern Alps. Stop at the Sign of the Kiwi or the Takahe cafe.
- Banks Peninsula Track — A 2–4 day walk that loops around the peninsula's eastern bays. Book ahead for hut accommodation.
- Birdlings Flat — A wild shingle beach at the southern end of Lake Forsyth, famous for agate-hunting and dramatic surf. It's a 10-minute drive from Little River.
- Christchurch — The garden city is the obvious start or end point, with its revitalised city centre, botanic gardens, and Antarctic attractions.
