Key Summit Track is a gem within Fiordland National Park, offering one of the most accessible alpine experiences in New Zealand. The trail climbs steadily through ancient beech forest before breaking out above the treeline to reveal a stunning 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountains, including the Humboldt and Darran ranges. The summit itself is a tussock-covered alpine plateau dotted with tarns, where you can soak in the sheer scale of the Southern Alps. This track is a highlight of the Routeburn Track but can be done as a rewarding day walk from the Divide shelter.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 3–4 hours return (2.5 km each way with a 500 m elevation gain). The track is steep but well-maintained; most walkers reach the summit in 1.5–2 hours. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover and to enjoy the best light. It's a perfect half-day activity from Te Anau or Milford Sound, leaving time for other explorations.
