Key Summit Track is a gem within Fiordland National Park, offering one of the most accessible alpine experiences in New Zealand. The trail climbs steadily through ancient beech forest before breaking out above the treeline to reveal a stunning 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountains, including the Humboldt and Darran ranges. The summit itself is a tussock-covered alpine plateau dotted with tarns, where you can soak in the sheer scale of the Southern Alps. This track is a highlight of the Routeburn Track but can be done as a rewarding day walk from the Divide shelter.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic Summit Views: At the top, you're rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Hollyford Valley, Lake Marian, and the Darren Mountains – a photographer's dream.
- Alpine Tarns: The summit plateau is studded with small tarns that perfectly reflect the surrounding peaks on a calm day.
- Beech Forest Walk: The lower section winds through lush, moss-draped silver beech forest, with opportunities to spot native birds like the kea and tomtit.
- Routeburn Track Connection: This track is the first section of the famous Routeburn Track, so you can get a taste of one of New Zealand's Great Walks in just a few hours.
- Geology and Flora: Interpretive signs along the way explain the unique alpine environment, including cushion plants and snow tussocks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 3–4 hours return (2.5 km each way with a 500 m elevation gain). The track is steep but well-maintained; most walkers reach the summit in 1.5–2 hours. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover and to enjoy the best light. It's a perfect half-day activity from Te Anau or Milford Sound, leaving time for other explorations.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Milford Sound: A must-do cruise through dramatic fiords, about a 1.5-hour drive from the Divide.
- Te Anau: The gateway town for Fiordland, with glowworm caves and lake cruises.
- Routeburn Track: For those with more time, the full Routeburn Great Walk is a 3-day tramping adventure.
- Hollyford Valley: Explore the Hollyford Track or take a scenic flight over the fiords.
