One of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Kepler Track is a 60 km (37 mi) loop through Fiordland National Park, offering a spectacular mix of beech forest, tussock-covered ridgelines, and alpine lakes. Starting and ending at Lake Te Anau, this hut-based tramp is known for its well-graded paths and stunning mountain views. It's a must-do for hikers seeking a multi-day adventure without the crowds of the Milford Track.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Luxmore Summit – A side trip from Luxmore Hut offers panoramic views of Lake Te Anau and the surrounding peaks.
- Iris Burn Hut and Waterfall – The largest hut on the track, set beside a dramatic waterfall and swimming hole.
- Kepler Mountains – The exposed alpine section between Luxmore and Iris Burn Huts is the track's highlight, with endless vistas.
- Lake Manapouri – A short detour near the end of the track leads to this pristine lake, perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Control Gates – The start/end point at Waiau River, where you can see the hydro-control gates regulating the lake levels.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Kepler Track in 3–4 days, staying at the three Department of Conservation huts (Luxmore, Iris Burn, and Moturau) or camping. The track is well-marked and suitable for fit beginners, but be prepared for changeable alpine weather. If you have less time, a day hike to Mount Luxmore (return) or a short walk to Brod Bay is a great taster.
