Kaiteriteri is the golden gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, where a crescent of fine golden sand meets impossibly clear turquoise water. This sleepy seaside settlement, just a short drive from Motueka, feels like a secret beach hideaway—even in summer its main stretch of sand rarely feels crowded. The vibe is pure coastal New Zealand: kayaks stacked on the shore, the thwack of a tennis ball from the courts, and the smell of sunscreen and salt. It’s the launch pad for the Abel Tasman Coast Track, water taxis, and sea kayaking trips, but also a perfect spot to simply lie on the sand and watch the tide slide in.
Highlights & What to See
- Kaiteriteri Beach – The star of the show: golden sand, safe swimming, and a grassy reserve with picnic tables. Hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard right on the beach.
- Abel Tasman National Park – Accessed by water taxi from Kaiteriteri; the park’s granite outcrops, native bush, and secluded coves are world-class. Walk the Coast Track or just explore a section.
- Split Apple Rock – A perfectly split granite boulder just offshore, best seen on a kayak tour or from a scenic boat cruise.
- Sea Kayaking – Paddle around the headlands to find seal colonies and hidden beaches; guided trips range from half-day to multi-day.
- Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park – A network of flowy singletrack through pine forest, suitable for all abilities, with bike hire available.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day or two: one day for a water taxi trip and a walk in Abel Tasman (e.g., from Totaranui back), plus a second day to relax on the beach, kayak, or mountain bike. If you’re short on time, a half-day beach stop and a short walk to the lookout point is enough to soak up the atmosphere. Overnight stays are rewarding for sunrise and sunset over the sand.
