The Kaikoura Coast Track is a magnificent multi-day walk that hugs the rugged coastline of the South Island, offering unparalleled views of the Pacific Ocean and the towering Seaward Kaikoura Range. This privately managed track takes you through working sheep and cattle stations, across pristine beaches, and along dramatic clifftops, with chances to spot fur seals, dolphins, and whales offshore. It's a true wilderness experience that combines New Zealand's iconic farming heritage with its spectacular natural beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most walkers complete the Kaikoura Coast Track in 3 days and 2 nights, covering about 40 km. You can also opt for a shorter 2-day version by skipping the middle section. Book well in advance as the track has limited capacity (maximum 16 people per night). The walking is moderate with some steep climbs; allow 5–7 hours of walking each day. It's a self-guided experience, so you'll carry your own pack, but huts provide basic accommodation (bunks, gas cookers, and cold water).
