Hundalee Hills
Rising abruptly from the Pacific coast, the Hundalee Hills offer a dramatic landscape of rolling green ridges, limestone outcrops, and deep river valleys. This rugged area, straddling the border between Canterbury and Kaikōura, is a hidden gem for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking solitude away from the tourist trail. The hills are part of the Seaward Kaikōura Range, and their exposed bluffs provide sweeping views of the ocean and the Southern Alps on clear days. The area is also rich in Māori history, with several pā sites and ancient trails used for collecting pounamu (greenstone).
Highlights & What to See
- Hundalee Hills Walkway – A challenging 4–6 hour tramp through tussock and forest, rewarding you with panoramic views from the summit ridges.
- Limestone Formations – Explore the striking white limestone cliffs and caves near the Conway River, popular with photographers and geology enthusiasts.
- Birdwatching – Kea, falcons, and bellbirds are common; keep an eye out for the rare black-fronted tern along the riverbeds.
- Conway River Valley – Drive or cycle along the gravel road that winds through the valley, passing historic shepherds' huts and tranquil swimming holes.
- Māori Heritage Sites – Several unmarked pā sites dot the hills, offering a glimpse into pre-European life (respect these areas and do not disturb).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the walkway or driving through the valley, but to fully appreciate the area's wild beauty, plan a full day. Combine a morning hike with an afternoon picnic by the Conway River. Overnight stays are limited to basic DOC campsites or nearby farmstays, so consider this a stop on a larger road trip between Christchurch and Kaikōura rather than a destination in itself.
