Nestled in a valley of the Southern Alps, Hanmer Springs is a thermal resort town that feels like a mountain hideaway. Just a 90-minute drive north of Christchurch, it offers a perfect blend of alpine scenery, outdoor adventure, and soothing hot pools. The air smells of pine and sulphur, and the pace of life slows down as soon as you arrive.
Highlights & What to See
- Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa – Soak in natural mineral water surrounded by mountain views. The complex includes sulphur pools, freshwater pools, and a private spa area.
- Conical Hill Walk – A short but steep climb through red beech forest rewards with panoramic views over the town and mountains. Do it at sunset for golden light.
- Woodland Walk – A gentle loop through towering redwoods and along the river. Look out for the glowworm grotto after dark.
- Hanmer Springs Adventure Centre – Bungy jumping, jet boating, quad biking, and mountain biking. The Hanmer Springs Bungy is one of New Zealand's most scenic.
- Dog Stream Waterfall – A 20-minute walk from town leads to a cascading waterfall and a natural rock slide. Bring a picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors stay one or two nights, which allows time to enjoy the pools, do a couple of walks, and try an adventure activity. A day trip from Christchurch is possible but feels rushed – the town's charm lies in its relaxed rhythm. Arrive early if day-tripping to secure a poolside spot.
