Greymouth, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a gritty, authentic town where the Grey River meets the Tasman Sea. It's the gateway to the rugged glaciers and dense rainforests of the region, with a rich history of gold mining and coal mining that still shapes its character. The town itself is compact and unpretentious, offering a genuine slice of Kiwi coastal life, with a burgeoning craft beer scene and dramatic river-mouth scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Shantytown Heritage Park – a living-history museum that recreates a 19th-century gold-mining town, complete with a steam train ride through native bush.
- Monteith's Brewery – tour one of New Zealand's most iconic breweries, sample its famous beers and ales, and enjoy a hearty pub meal.
- Brunner Mine Historic Area – explore the remnants of New Zealand's deadliest industrial disaster site, with informative walking trails and a memorial.

Suggested Time to Spend
Greymouth is best as an overnight stop to break up the drive between Christchurch and the glaciers. One full day allows you to explore Shantytown in the morning, visit Monteith's for a late lunch, and wander the riverfront in the afternoon. If you're short on time, a half-day is enough to hit the brewery and the heritage park.
