Golden Bay is a serene slice of the South Island's northwest coast, where golden sands meet lush native bush and turquoise waters. This laid-back region feels a world away from Christchurch, offering a slower pace, vibrant arts communities, and some of New Zealand's most stunning natural landscapes. Whether you're soaking up the sun at Tata Beach or exploring the arcane rock formations of Wharariki Beach, Golden Bay rewards those who take the time to wander.
Highlights & What to See
- Wharariki Beach – a wild, windswept stretch of sand with dramatic sea arches and seal colonies, best visited at low tide.
- Farewell Spit – a 25km sandspit and bird sanctuary; take a guided tour to see gannet colonies and migratory waders.
- Te Waikoropupū Springs – crystal-clear freshwater springs, among the clearest in the world, with a short boardwalk loop.
- Abel Tasman National Park – the northern entrance (Wainui) offers kayaking and the start of the Abel Tasman Coast Track.
- Takaka – the bohemian hub of Golden Bay, with artisan galleries, organic cafes, and the quirky Labyrinth Rocks.
- Riwaka Resurgence – a beautiful limestone spring and swimming hole, just a short walk from the road.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Golden Bay at least two full days – three if you want to hike in Abel Tasman or explore Farewell Spit. Many travelers combine it with a loop from Nelson or Motueka, but the winding road over Takaka Hill deserves a relaxed pace. Stay overnight in Takaka or at a beachside bach to truly unwind.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson – the sunny gateway to the region, with a lively arts scene and nearby vineyards.
- Abel Tasman National Park – easily accessed from Marahau or Kaiteriteri for day walks or multi-day tramping.
- Motueka – a handy base for the park, with orchards and craft breweries.
- Kahurangi National Park – offers remote tramping and the famous Heaphy Track.
- Pupu Hydro Walk – a short walk to a historic water race and a natural rock slide, fun for all ages.
