Dart River

Flowing out of the glaciated peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park, the Dart River is a wild, milky-blue torrent that powers through one of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes. This is jet-boat country – a thrilling ride through narrow gorges, past ancient rock formations and dense beech forest, all set against the jagged backdrop of the Southern Alps. Whether you’re skimming the rapids or tramping the famous Routeburn Track, the Dart River offers a raw, untamed slice of Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors experience the Dart River as a half-day trip from Queenstown (about 45 minutes drive to Glenorchy). The jet-boat safari takes roughly 3–4 hours including the forest walk. If you’re tramping the Routeburn Track, budget 2–3 days for the full crossing. For a relaxed day, combine a morning jet-boat with an afternoon exploring Glenorchy and Paradise.
