Christchurch: A City Guide

Christchurch, the Garden City of New Zealand's South Island, is a vibrant blend of English heritage, innovative regeneration, and gateway to the wild outdoors. Rebuilt with creativity after the 2011 earthquakes, its streets now buzz with street art, pop-up bars, and a thriving food scene. The Avon River meanders through the city, past punts, parks, and the neo-Gothic Christchurch Cathedral (still under restoration). With the Southern Alps as a backdrop and Banks Peninsula a short drive away, Christchurch is both a cultural hub and a launchpad for adventure.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Spend at least two days exploring Christchurch itself: one for the central city gardens, museums, and street art; another to venture to Banks Peninsula or the Port Hills. If you’re using Christchurch as a base for the wider Canterbury region (e.g., Arthur’s Pass, Kaikōura, or the ski fields), allow three to four nights. The city is compact and walkable, but renting a car gives you flexibility for day trips.
