Christchurch Botanic Gardens are a lush, 21-hectare oasis in the heart of the city, offering a serene escape with a stunning collection of native and exotic plants. Established in 1863, these gardens are a testament to the city's resilience and beauty, especially after the 2011 earthquakes. Meander along the Avon River, explore themed gardens, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere that locals and visitors adore.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least 2–3 hours to fully explore the gardens. If you're short on time, a quick 45-minute loop covering the Rose Garden, conservatories, and the Avon Riverfront is rewarding. Combine with a visit to the Canterbury Museum (adjacent) for a half-day cultural outing. The gardens are free and open daily, so you can easily return for a picnic or a morning walk.
