Once the University of Canterbury, the Christchurch Arts Centre is a vibrant hub of creativity housed in striking Gothic Revival buildings. After the 2011 earthquakes, this complex was meticulously restored and now buzzes with artist studios, galleries, craft workshops, and a lively weekend market. It's the perfect place to soak up local culture, browse handmade treasures, and watch artists at work in their studios.
Highlights & What to See
- Artisan Workshops & Studios: Peek into glassblowing, pottery, jewellery-making, and weaving studios — many artists welcome visitors and sell direct.
- Weekend Market (Sat & Sun): Browse stalls of local art, crafts, and gourmet food in the cobbled courtyards, with live music adding to the festive vibe.
- Historic Buildings: Admire the neo-Gothic stone architecture, including the Great Hall and the Clock Tower, which survived the earthquakes and were beautifully restored.
- Galleries & Exhibitions: Check out rotating exhibitions in the Centre's galleries, featuring contemporary art, photography, and design by local artists.
- Dining & Cafés: Grab a coffee at one of the courtyard cafés or enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant, often using local produce.
Suggested Time to Spend
