Cave Stream Scenic Reserve
Just a short drive from Arthur's Pass National Park, Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of adventure and geology. This reserve centers on a 3.5-kilometer-long limestone cave carved by Cave Stream, where you can actually walk through the cave from end to end. It's a thrilling, wet, and dark experience that feels like exploring the underworld – bring a headlamp, sturdy shoes, and a sense of adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Cave Stream Walkway: The main attraction – a 1.2-kilometer walk through the cave itself. Expect to wade in knee-deep water, scramble over rocks, and marvel at limestone formations, glowworms, and the dramatic entrance and exit waterfalls.
- Scenic Reserve Loop Track: A short above-ground walk that offers views of the surrounding beech forest and the stream's resurgence from the cave. Great for a quick leg stretch without getting wet.
- Limestone Cliffs and Karst Landscape: The area around the reserve is dotted with fascinating limestone outcrops and sinkholes – perfect for photography and spotting native birds like the kea.
- Glowworms: Inside the cave, look up to see tiny pinpricks of blue-green light – glowworms clinging to the ceiling. Best seen with a dimmed headlamp.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the full cave walk, plus another 30 minutes for the loop track. The cave walk is best done in dry weather when water levels are low; check conditions beforehand. This is a half-day stop if you're driving between Christchurch and the West Coast, or a fun afternoon outing from Arthur's Pass.
