At the southern tip of the North Island, Cape Palliser is a dramatic, windswept coastline where rugged cliffs meet the wild Cook Strait. This is New Zealand at its rawest – a place of fur seals, a historic lighthouse, and a staircase that feels like it climbs to the edge of the world. It's a perfect half-day escape from the Wairarapa wine region or a detour on the way to Martinborough.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Palliser Lighthouse: Climb the 250 steps to this iconic red-and-white lighthouse for panoramic views over the Pacific. On a clear day, you can see the Kaikōura Ranges on the South Island.
- Seal Colony: Just below the car park, a large colony of New Zealand fur seals lounges on the rocks. Watch them from the viewing platform – pups are especially playful in summer.
- Putangirua Pinnacles: A short walk from the coast leads to a surreal landscape of ancient rock formations, featured in The Lord of the Rings as the Paths of the Dead. The 1.5-hour loop track is a must.
- Ōnoke Spit & Lake Ferry: En route, stop at the historic Lake Ferry Hotel for a drink, or walk the spit where the lake meets the sea – a great spot for birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–4 hours at Cape Palliser, including the lighthouse climb and a walk to the Putangirua Pinnacles. If you're combining it with a day in the Wairarapa, start early and allow a full day for the loop from Martinborough or Greytown. The road is gravel for the last 20 km, so add extra time for a slow, scenic drive.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
