Stretching along the Ōtākaro Avon River in the heart of Christchurch, the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial is a poignant and beautifully designed tribute to the 185 people who lost their lives in the 2011 earthquake and its aftershocks. Unveiled in 2017, the memorial consists of a series of white stone plinths and a curved wall engraved with the names of the deceased, set within a peaceful riverside garden. It's a place for quiet reflection, offering a deep connection to the city's resilience and the community's journey of recovery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 30 minutes to an hour to fully absorb the memorial. It's best visited on a clear day, ideally in the morning or late afternoon when the light softens the stone. The site is easily walkable from central Christchurch, so you can slot it into a wider exploration of the city centre.
